The Power of Goals

The Power of Goals

Most people give lip-service to goal setting.  Properly set goals are powerful and life changing.  Everyone has a goal or goals.  We keep them in our heads.  Problem is that most goals are just pipe dreams.

The difference between a dream and a goal is a goal is specific, clear, has a plan behind it, has a deadline, and is written down.  Dreams float in our mind and make us feel good about a possible future.  Goals that are properly set with a solid action plan can become a reality on your timeline.

To set an achievable goal, we must first figure out what it is we want.  I mean, what we really want.  Finding what we want takes some time and effort.  When it comes to setting health goals, we must know exactly what getting healthy looks like to us.  Is it getting to an ideal weight, a certain level of fitness, or getting off of blood pressure or diabetes medication?  The goal cannot be just to lose some weight, or get healthier.  It has to be very specific and it has to be something that will move us emotionally, mentally, and physically.

A goal without an emotional link is likely to be given up on.  We must have a reason why we want to achieve the goal.  Losing weight in itself does not have any emotional power.  Losing weight to live longer and enjoy the grandchildren can drive you toward thin and healthy.  Losing weight to find or enhance a relationship can be a strong driver.  Don't just think about the goal. Think "Why" this goal.  What is important about achieving it and how will my life be better by doing so.

When you have a goal and a strong "Why" behind it, the tactics and strategies to achieve it will become evident.  We all know we must eat less and exercise more, but what drives us to consistently do the work is the compelling reason we find at the end of the journey.

Find the goal, find the compelling "Why", and take action on the path.  Be consistent and always know why you are working toward the end result.  Any time you start to drift away from achieving your goal, think back to your why.  If the reason you want to be lean and fit is strong, you will have no difficulty getting back on track.  Keep your reason in front of you at all times.  Never forget why you want to be thinner and healthier.  You will accomplish this goal and you will be able to Live Lean, Live Long, and Live Life to the Fullest.
