     Being overweight takes the wind out of our sails.  We tire out more quickly, have less energy, feel full and bloated a lot, and have difficulty doing the things we did years ago.  We avoid getting our picture taken and don't feel good about the look of our body.  We believe that this is a character flaw.  We think that it is all our fault. Though we are responsible for all aspects of our lives, Overweight Syndrome and Obesity are medical disorders.  Yes, It's a disease.  It is genetically based and biochemical and hormone modulated.  As we eat more, exercise less and gain weight, the disease progresses at an even faster pace.
   
     When we attempt to reduce the weight, our own body seems to fight us every step of the way.  You are not imagining this.  We have the genes of our ancestors.  Thousands of years ago our ancestors spent sun up to sun down searching for water, food, and shelter.  They expended vast amounts of energy just staying alive.  It was crucial to be able to store body fat as a survival mechanism.  Anyone not able to rapidly put on body fat did not survive.  When food was caught or found, it was eaten in its entirety.  There was no food storage or refrigeration.  Eat it all, put on some fat, and go in search of the next meal.
 
     Today, especially in America, food is plentiful, located on every street corner, and relatively inexpensive.  We expend no energy to obtain it.  In fact we can drive up to a window, push a button on the car door, and 4000 calories will be passed through in just a few moments.  Food has become tastier and more calorie dense.  We have thousands of eating choices to make.  Our genetics even drive us toward certain types of food.  We know there are two gene clusters that drive us toward sweet or savory foods.  If you ever wonder why you love sugar, you probably have the sweet genes.
 
    Understanding that you have a disease and not just a willpower problem will allow you to approach this disorder differently than you have in the past.  It must be treated like a medical disease and treated for life.  A simple low calorie diet for a few weeks will do nothing in the long term other than frustrate you.  This disease must be approached from 5 different modes.
 
     The 5 factors to be managed include 1. Nutrition   2. Physical Activity   3. Metabolic Balance    4.  Hormone Balance    5.  Psychological adjustment.  Just working on any one alone will allow you to lose a few pounds and then regain them immediately.  All 5 factors must be evaluated and treated for a remission of the disease to happen. Don't be frustrated that this problem is more complex than you have imagined.  Be excited that the disease can be treated and a remission of a normal body weight can be sustained.  Any disease when treated properly will respond in a positive way. With weight loss and maintenance, the treatment can provide a lifetime at a lean and healthy weight.
