What are X-rays?

An X-ray is a digital imaging technique that sends particles of electromagnetic radiation (X-rays) through your body to create a digital picture. X-rays allow Dr. Oliver and his team to see critical interior structures.

Dense structures, like bones, block the X-ray particles and appear white in the images. Metals, structures containing air, and the contrast dyes the X-ray technician may use to highlight different areas of your body look white, too. Your muscles, fat, and fluids appear gray.

Why do I need an X-ray?

Dr. Oliver may order an X-ray image to get a better idea of what’s going on inside your body so he can accurately diagnose your presenting problem. X-rays are used to diagnose:

  • Fractures
  • Dislocated joints
  • Tooth decay
  • Foreign objects
  • Arthritis
  • Cause of abdominal pain
  • Cancer
  • Pneumonia or tuberculosis

What happens when I get an X-ray?

Your technician at Oliver Family Healthcare asks you to remove your jewelry, eyeglasses, and other items that may interfere with the X-ray. Depending on which area of your body requires imaging, you may have to lie down, stand, or sit.

You must hold still while the image is created. Your technician may even ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds. Sometimes, the technician injects the area being examined with a contrast agent, or you take one orally. Contrast agents make it easier for Dr. Oliver to visualize what’s happening inside your body.

Bone X-rays usually take a few minutes, whereas complicated issues take about an hour for a complete set of X-rays. Your technician may take X-rays from multiple angles.

How soon do I get the results from my X-rays?

If your situation is urgent, like a broken bone, Dr. Oliver reads your X-rays and gives you the results shortly after your X-ray session. For less urgent situations, you may be asked to come back on another day for your results.

Oliver Family Healthcare features convenient in-office X-ray services. If you think you need an X-ray or have unexplained internal pain, contact the helpful team by phone or use the online appointment form.
