EKG Q & A

Oliver Family Healthcare

What’s an EKG?

An echocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a quick and painless test that records your heart’s electrical activity. Dr. Oliver and his team of experts at Oliver Family Healthcare may order this test if you have high blood pressure (HBP), are prehypertensive (at risk for HBP), or have presented with heart-related symptoms.

An EKG is used to check for:

  • Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
  • A heart rate that’s too slow or fast
  • Blocked or narrowed arteries
  • Ischemia (poor blood flow to the heart)
  • Signs of a previous heart attack
  • Structural abnormalities
  • Efficacy of heart medications

Why did my doctor order an EKG?

Dr. Oliver or another team member orders an EKG based on your presenting symptoms or because they discovered an issue during your physical examination. Symptoms that may prompt Dr. Oliver to request an EKG include:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Chest pain
  • Rapid pulse
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • HBP
  • Family history of heart disease

What happens during an EKG?

During a resting EKG, you lie down comfortably while your Oliver Care technician attaches ten electrode patches to your chest, arms, and legs. Men may need to shave their chests because the patches are adhesive.

As you recline, a computer records the pattern of the electrical impulses that pass through your heart on graph paper. The entire test takes about 10 to 15 minutes from set-up to completion. Dr. Oliver may want to repeat the test while you exercise to see how your heart reacts to stress.

What happens after my EKG?

You can return to your normal daily activities after an EKG. Dr. Oliver may interpret and give you your results later that day, or schedule a follow-up appointment.
