Vacations and Weight

Vacations and Weight

We all love vacations.  It's a time to relax, get things done, travel, see new places, and spend time together.  What it shouldn't be is a weight gain nightmare.  Why do people gain weight so often when on vacation?   The most common mechanism for putting on some extra pounds is the break from routine.  When on vacation we change our sleep patterns, like going to bed later and getting up later.  We change our eating times as well as what we eat.  We do more restaurant meals while vacationing.  We often just throw caution to the wind and decide nobody is going to put any restrictions on me - I'm on Vacation!

The  problem occurs when we return from our vacation and back to reality.  The scales spring in an upward direction and we are now regretful about our new weight and the extra pounds we have to lose.  We also feel bad for negating the hard work we did to get in better shape before the vacation.  So, how do we go on vacation and have all the fun we expect and come back happy about our body weight?  Here are some tips to help make that happen.  Before the tips though, we must approach our vacation with a Thinking - Planning - Focus mentality.  We do this for the fun activities, hotels, flights, and other vacation related activities.  Why not do it for the vacation eating?  Think about how you can enjoy eating while on vacation without overdoing.  Plan by looking at menus of restaurants in advance and consider taking along some good tasting snacks in the suitcase or your carry-on.

Focus at meal times.  You don't need to stress about eating, just make some better choices and realize smaller portions keep you energized and feeling good.  Remember, you will eat again. Sometimes while on vacation we eat as if there will be no tomorrow.  Take control and come back from your time away with a zero weight gain.

     Tips for Vacations:

     1.  Don't throw in the towel. Avoid splurging.  Don't go crazy with eating.
     2.  Take Control in Restaurants.
     3.  Slow down and enjoy each meal.
     4.  Be Active.  Hike, walk, swim, ski.
     5.  Have a treat.  Choose a small portion treat and enjoy it with your family or friends.
6,  Make a better choice.  When eating, choose a better choice.
     7.  Drink lots of water
     8.  Avoid the bar and alcohol.
     9.  Take along some healthy snacks.
    10. Have fun and make some great memories on your vacation.

Upon your return from vacation, take stock of how you did with your eating and activity.  If you struggled, take a little time to analyze why you had difficulty and write some notes on how you might do better next time.  This review will allow you to change your habits over time when you vacation.
Vacations are about recharging, having fun, and spending quality time with others.  They are not for rigid dieting, however, be mindful and don't come back with a big weight gain.  It can put a damper on the great time you had.
Now, go plan your next vacation.
