The Path of Most Resistance

Take the Path of Most Resistance

I hate to admit it, but I, like most people, are inherently lazy.  We all like to kick back.  We all like to relax.  We all try to find easier ways to do things.  And don't even get me started on procrastination.   Yes, left to our own habits we tend to take the path of least resistance.

Our lives today are filled with so many conveniences.  Think about it.  Cars that can virtually drive themselves.  Refrigerators that can keep track of their contents and order for us.  Restaurants and delivery services that can get food to us with the touch of a phone button.  TV's that take voice commands.  Computers that can take us anywhere in the world, now.  Soon to be passenger travel into space.

With convenience everywhere, we have little incentive to put in a lot of effort. We marvel and are a bit frustrated that some of the best paying jobs are performed by people sitting at a computer all day.  Evolutionists think that down the road, humans will be just a big head with a big brain and a small insignificant body to perform survival tasks for our brain.

Our body was built for movement.  In order to protect our brain, we must move.  Sedentary lifestyle will lead to a shorter and more disease ridden life.  Taking the easy or less resistant path will lead to trouble.  We will experience greater body fat and weight, less muscle mass and tone, poor circulation and increased heart disease, and a high risk of dementia as we age.

One of life's greatest lessons is to avoid the path of the herd.  The people we look up to and admire are those that went in the opposite direction of the herd.  When the massive majority of our population is taking the path of least resistance, we should be taking the path of most resistance.  This applies to all aspects of our life.

It's easier to graduate and move back home with our parents.  It's easier to avoid serious relationships and commitments.  It's easier to not have kids.  It's easier to hop from job to job when difficulty arises.  It's easier to avoid conflict. It's easier to eat poorly and to avoid physical activity.  Do we want easy or do we want excellent?  The choice is up to us.

If we choose excellence and the option to become the best we can be, we will have to work hard, put in the hours, and sacrifice something.  Nothing of significant achievement comes easily.  If it did, everyone would have done it.

Only a small number of people who struggle with excess body weight will permanently get to their ideal weight.  It's not easy.  For many, it's a lifetime effort.  There are setbacks and victories along the way.  If you are serious about getting to your best weight and staying there for the rest of your life, you must take the path of most resistance.  This is a decision that cannot be taken lightly.

The herd will dabble with diets and lose and gain over and over again.  The person who makes the decision to beat this disease for good will not dabble but behave like a mature professional doing whatever it takes to get the job done.
Every time a "new" diet pops up, it amazes me how many people jump on the bandwagon as if this is the answer they have been waiting for.  I'm asked over and over my opinion about every new diet or plan that takes over the internet.

My answer is always, the best diet in the world is the one you can stay on for life and it must be combined with the 4 other aspects of treating the Overweight Syndrome.  That usually promotes a cold stare from my patient as they were wanting me to say that this finally is the answer to all their weight issues.

So, what is the path of most resistance?  This path requires learning to eat smaller portions throughout the day with a balance of protein, healthy fat, and carbohydrates.  It requires reducing total carbohydrate intake.  This path requires some form of regular physical activity that leads to a sweat building up to 150 minutes a week.  The most resistant path requires teaming up with a doctor or health provider who can assess your metabolic and hormone function and design a plan to correct any issues.  The path of most resistance requires working on our psychological shortcomings and improving our thinking and behavior when it comes to eating.

The path of most resistance involves a 5 factor treatment plan for the disease of Obesity and Overweight Syndrome.  Without taking this path, we are destined to repeat the weight loss weight gain cycle over and over ending in total frustration.  This frustration will eventually lead to complacency and settling for a less healthy, less vibrant life.  I'm often concerned about the trend to accept our body as it is and learn to live joyously in an overweight body.  I agree we must learn to love ourselves, but never accept an unhealthy state just because the trend says "your weight doesn't matter".   It doesn't change who you are, but it does matter with regard to health, fitness, longevity, and energy.

Take some time to consider whether you are on a path of least resistance or ready to take a path of most resistance.   It's not a sudden all or nothing change that is needed.  This change of path will take time, effort, a learning curve, and consistency.  It can be done and you can do it.  Focus each day on one or two things that have been avoided because they may have been difficult to accomplish.  Maybe time is short, finances are thin, or others around you prefer the path of least resistance.  We can break free and work toward meaningful achievement toward our long term best body weight.

Today can be the day that you break from the herd and become a leader in a new direction.  Today can be the day that you stop settling for good enough and move toward excellence.  You are exceptional no matter what you or others think and you can become the best version of yourself.  Just take the path of Most Resistance...Today.
