Exercise and Weight Loss

Exercise and Weight Loss

Many of my patients hit the gym hard 4-6 days a week and complain that they can't lose a pound.  Animal and human studies have shown that our ability to lose weight with exercise is a complex genetic and biochemical process.  In fact our athletic ability is based mostly on our genetic blueprint. Ever wonder why some people are natural runners and others just can't do it?

The ability to lose body fat with exercise is inherited and only 50% of the population have the genetic capacity to do it.  The other half of us are what are known as exercise non-responders.  We can exercise all we want and our body won't give up the pounds.

But Wait!!   Don't stop exercising.  Exercise is one of the best medicines for our health, even if it won't reduce our weight.  Physical Activity reduces inflammation, lowers insulin and blood sugar levels, tones the body, takes inches off our body, improves circulation, enhances our breahting, promotes circulation, and will even make you live longer.  Good reasons to continue exercising.

For us non-responders, we must exercise and focus on diet.  Even the exercise responders will only lose a few pounds over months with vigorous excercise.  Our weight is about our diet and exercise is about fitness, inches, and overall health.

We cannot out train a bad diet. So, don't beat yourself up if exercise won't get rid of the pounds. Keep doing it for the sake of your overall health and longevity.

This should make you feel better and less frustrated about your exercise and allow you to do it for all the right reasons.  Now focus on the dietary component of weight loss and you'll see amazing results.
