Don't Settle

 
     We live in a society of settlers.  We settle for mediocrity.  We settle for comfort.  We settle for "good enough".  We settle for someone else to take care of it or us.  Worst of all, we settle for "OK" health.  It's ok now for young girls and guys to have their oversized bellies hanging out of the short shirt. It's ok to be "plus" sized.  It's shaming if anyone calls someone on their body weight, even if it's sincere and helpful.
 
     When did we get complacent with being overweight, obese, or here comes the un-PC word...fat?   It has most likely happened because getting thinner and more fit is hard work and a lifetime effort.  The answer doesn't lie in everyone being skinny or being at some Insurance company determined perfect BMI.  The answer is in working to become the best you can be.  The best for someone might be 10, 20, 30, or 50 pounds over their ideal weight, but it is not giving up and letting the genetics and fast food take us where they want.
 
     We should give a damn about how we feel and how our bodies function.  It's ok to care about how we look.  It's ok to try to fit into smaller clothes, lower our blood pressure, lower our cholesterol, and lower our blood sugar. Medical science has contributed to our generation living longer than any other generation.  Unfortunately, we believe that our children and grandchildren will not be so fortunate.  We have passed on some ugly habits.
 
     I'm not who I used to be, I'm not who I want to be, but I'm certainly not yet who I'm going to be.  We will never achieve perfection in body or health, but settling for mediocre or poor is not what we as humans were put here to achieve.  It's time for us to kick lazy out the door.  It's time for us to stop settling for less.  It's time for us to make a decision to live the best possible life we can live.  To live that life requires health and vitality. lt requires effort and persistence.
 
     To stop Settling takes focus, work, persistence, and time.  There is no short term fix.  It's cliche to say I'll just change my Lifestyle.  Certainly, an overall change in our daily habits is necessary and to do that takes time and repetition.  Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.  If you practice at eating poorly, you will permanently eat poorly.  If you practice at eating healthy, you will permanently eat healthy.
 
     Our human uniqueness allows us to make choices.  We don't have to be trapped in our poor eating and activity habits.  We can choose to seek help for our metabolic and hormonal imbalances.  We can learn to change our thinking about food, eating, dieting, exercise, and why getting leaner is important.  It really is up to us.
 
     I am talking about Crushing Your Fat Genes.  Making the decision to stop living an uncomfortable, unhealthy life.  No matter what genetic hand you were dealt when it comes to weight, heart disease, diabetes, and many other disorders, the hand can be played well and beaten.  Decide, plan, act, and move in the direction of excellence.  No more mediocrity.  No more Settling.
