Distraction

Distraction

Our senses are bombarded by thousands of inputs every minute.  We have gotten pretty good at ignoring most of them.  We have sounds, images, noise, conversations, and issues confronting us at all times.  We have learned to delete most of this external noise from our minds. These noises are distractions.

Unfortunately, these days there is even more noise.  Radio, TV, cell phones, texts, emails, social media sites all vying for our attention.  If we give in and listen, watch, or engage, we are usually being pulled away from what is important to us.  We are distracted.

We are either working toward our goals and future, or working toward someone else's goals and future.  We get to decide.  It is important to consider the agenda of others.  A simple test is to ask, what is it that this person wants from me.  A TV commercial is not trying to educate you, it is trying to sell you.  Their agenda is to get you to buy their product.  It may be a product that you need or want, but you are now getting it on their time table and at their request.

I have well intended sales people stop by my office all the time to show me the latest and greatest product for my medical practice.  If I stop and listen to them, I am being taken away from my agenda, which is seeing and treating my patients.  I am now on their agenda.  Most likely I will be buying things I didn't need  or even knew existed.

Over time I have developed a method to avoid all of this.  I have decided when I need something, I will research it and reach out to the sales person at that time, my time and my agenda.

When it comes to losing weight and getting healthy, we need to stay on our plan and agenda.  Others will  try to interfere and move us away from our agenda of getting lean and healthy.  It could be a friend or family member.  "Come on, let's go to the restaurant".  They are working their agenda, not yours.  We must learn to say no in a nice way.

I learned a long time ago how to say no to  people who wanted my time or money, but was not part of my agenda.  My goal was to make them feel almost happy that I said no.  I would say, "Thank you for asking, and I'm flattered that you thought of me for this, but my current vision and goals would make me a miserable helper for you,  maybe another time".   They would have this odd look on their face, but smile and say "OK".

Another way to control your agenda is to put "YOU" on your schedule as an important meeting.  If you schedule exercise in your daily schedule, treat it as any very important meeting.  If someone asks you to meet up with them for any reason and you're scheduled with yourself, you can just say, "I have an extremely important meeting that I cannot miss, maybe another time".

Learn to control your agenda and avoid distractions to your goals and vision.  Take charge of your life.  Stick to your goals and your plan.  Don't let anyone or anything else block you from success.  We can ignore distractions.  The best way is to not let them in.  Don't go to your social media sites or email except at designated limited times.  Stay off texting unless you must communicate with someone for a good reason.  Mindless conversations and gossip distract us from our daily mission.

The choice is to live in a world where we are merely pawns of others, or we are in control of our lives and turn them into the masterpiece we want.  We can get up every day and make this decision.  Here's to eliminating the noise and distraction and living the life you want in 2020.
